B4 Mercer Island Reporter Sports briefs Girls hoops win The Mercer Island High School girls basketball learn moved to second-place in the Kingco 3A Conference Sky Division with a pair of victories. The Islanders started the week off with a come-from-behind 39-36 triumph at Bellevue on Wednesday as injured forward Kristin Connolly led the way with 10 her 15 points coming in the fourth quarter. Connolly, who was sup- posed to miss up to three weeks due a bro— ken left ring finger, scored the final four points of the game after tying the game with a pair of free throws at 32-32. She also had a season-high 1 l rebounds. Lexie Richards also scored 15 points against the Wolverines (3—2. 46), who shot a dismal I-f'or-I3 from the free throw line, missing their last 13 attempts. In Friday’s game, Mercer Island out— lasted a surprisingly strong test from first-year Skyline to post a 62-55 victo- ry. Richards. who is averaging a career- high 206 points a game this season, scored 28 points to lead the Islanders, while Connolly (12 points), Gwynna Biggers ( 1(1) and Courtney Reimers (9) contributed. Cahoon wins tourney Junior Chris Cahoon won the Mount Rainier Invitational wrestling tournament I IS—pound title with a 13-5 victory over Stanwood’s Bo Harvey on Saturday. Teammates Matt Henry (135 pounds), Duncan Hansing (I78), Eddie Johnson (190) and Ben Mahdavi (275) all fin- ished second in their respective weight classes for the Islanders. Both Henry‘s and Mahdavi ’s losses were their first the two had seniors suffered this year. Henry lost 9-3 to Shelton’s Curtis Srnka and Mahdavi was pinned at the 2:48 mark by Aubum—Riverside‘s Aaron B jomberg. Hansing lost 9-4 to Shelton‘s Nick Cronquist and Johnson fell 10-7 to Mount Vemon’s Mike Van Pelt. In Wednesday’s home double dual meet, Mercer Island thumped Sammamish 55- 18 and Skyline 65-18 to improve to 5— 0. 6-3. Andy Barnette (108 pounds), Cahoon ( 122). Collin Hagstrom (129), Aaron Lyon (148) each had two pins. The Islanders will be hosting Newport tomorrow, Jan. 15, in a match that could decide the Kingco dual meet title. Rainey winsnational tournament in Arizona Mercer Island High junior Nick Rainey won his first national junior tennis tour— nament recently when he beat Clay Estes of Amarillo, Texas, ranked in the world. 6—4, 6-3 in the Copper Bowl champi- onship match recently in Tucson, Ariz. Rainey won seven matches over the four-day toumament to take the I7-I8 year—old crown in a field of over 200 boys In the semifinals, he bested Alabama‘s Alex Herrera 6-3, 6-2 and beat Trevor Smith. the son of tennis great Stan Smith, 6-(), 4-6, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. Rainey opened the toumament with a 6—1, 6-1 win over Sean Burns of New Mexico, followed by a 4-6, 6—2, 6-1 victory over Phoenix ‘s Jefi' Russell.
