One local book aficionado claims that whether its book clubs or gener til reading. women are the primary buyers and readers of fiction. Roger Page. owner of island Books. doesn‘t fully agree. "You could say that ()0 percent ol‘ our customers are women. and that those 60 percent read fiction rather than nonstiction. but the number one hard cover was Cold Mountain. and I’d say that moremen bought that book. and slightly more men than women bought Into Thin Air (#6 on Bestseller List"), but women bought it too." he noted. "It's just not cut and dried." One title on the list. #8. is The Starlite Drive-In by Mercer Islander Marjorie Reynolds. which sold over 200 copies. proving that locals have an eye for books written by fellow Islanders. Though they‘ve sold more copies than others. Page doesn‘t believe that bestseller lists are the most reliable sources ol‘ information. “You can look at them as being the most popular books. or as the lowest common denominator m» books that are only so-so that would appeal to a mass audience.
