Wednesday, April 20,1994 Mercer Island Reporter I I I l I l By Jane Meyer Mercer Island Reporter t’s been a year to remember ; for Henry Friedman. In one year, he’s received two personal invitations to the White House, one time to attend the opening of the United States Holo— caust Museum, and the other time to witness the signing of the Israe— li-PLO peace accord. He’s met heads of state. He’s {shaken hands with world leaders. :But for Friedman, nothing sur- passed the thrill of being invited {to Rome earlier this month for a {special audience with Pope John .Paul II, and being present at a {special Yom Hashoah (Day of Re- :snembrance) concert at the Vati‘ 1.0811. {1 About 85 Holocaust survivors :representing 12 countries were in- tvited to the historic commemora- ltion at the Vatican on April 7. It :was the first time in the history :that the Holocaust was formally {commemorated by the Vatican. It {was the first time that Jewish tmelodies were played inside the IVatican halls. were among only a handful of invitees from the western United States. A native of a village in the Ukraine, Friedman was a small boy when he hid in a barn for 17 months to escape the Nazis. In the last seven years, the‘ Mercer Is— land resident has become well— known for his tireless work in teaching the about the Holocaust and its lessons for peace. In 1989 he started the Surviving Generations of the Holocaust, and in 1990 he established the Wash- ington State Holocaust Education Resource Center, which arranges speakers and supplies curriculum materials to teachers. For Friedman, meeting the Pope was a profoundly moving experience. “He insisted on meet- ing and shaking hands with all of us,” said Friedman. “There was a radiance about him. It was a very spiritual moment. He repre- sents 1 billion people, and to think that a man of his stature would honor the dead and honor us. . .I felt I represented the 6 million who died a senseless death.” Friedman made a gift to the A Day of Remembrance caust survivors that his daughter, Debbie Benezra had made as an oral history project of the Second Generation organization. “When I gave it to the Pope he said ‘Be blessed for the important work your daughter is doing, and that we must never forget.”’ That evening the Holocaust survivors were joined by the President of Italy, other Italian dignitaries and ambassadors, and about 8,000 others to be present with Pope John Paul II in listen- ing to a special Yom Hashoah concert in the Vatican by the Lon- don Philharmonic Orchestra. Un- der the direction of conductor Gil- bert Levine, they played the K01 Nidre and other music by Leon— ard Bernstein, Franz Schubert, :Beethoven. Actor Richard Drey- fus recited the Kaddish, the prayer for the dead. “This was the first commemo- ration of the Shoah at the Vati- can,” said Friedman, “but I be- lieve it won’t be the last.” Henry Friedman and his wife, Sandy, were invited to the special Yom Hashoah (Day of Remembrance) commemor ration at the Vatican, where they also had a special audience with Pope John Paul II.
