Wednesday. April 29. I998 Swedish Health Services Municipal Bonds Islander takes first in state in middle school math competition Mercer Island eighth grader Dawn Lippen won a first place trophy in the Washington State Middle S c h o o l M a t h Championships on March 28. More than I00 teams from all over Washington state competed at the eighth grade level. Lippert. an eighth grader at Lakeside School. was captain of a Dawn Lippert V team that included Daniel Baker. Elia Mrak-Blumberg. and Marcus Duyzend. “We only practiced once together as a team." she explained. "I think we did well because we were relaxed. We were laughing the whole time and that helped us loosen up." The annual math competition. host- ed by the Blaine School System near the Canadian border, includes tests in geometry. algebra. probability. and men- tal math. Mental math is the only section in which each team member must com- pete without consulting another teammate. Lippen‘s dad. AI. who teaches math at Lakeside. coached Dawn‘s team and six other teams from Lakeside. “I teach my students to understand the princi— ples behind math problems. and to look for elegant solutions." he says. "This competition is an opportuni- ty for kids to tackle challenging problems and to push their math skills to the lim— it. It‘s especially important for middle school girls to experience success in math. Imagine. 2.000 mathletes corn— peting just for the fun of it on a Saturday moming. Bringing home the trophy was the icing on the cake." -vv- vvvvvvvv—vvvvvwm Mercer Island Reporter A7 PTA Seeks nominations Do you know someone who an extraordinary volunteer for children?
