C2 Mercer Island Reporter Scottish stories and ecently I ran into a friend at Rthe book store whose daugh— ters take Scottish dance. They have for years and have performed at local Scottish games events. This friend is mainly of Scottish ancestry, and we began to wonder aloud about the recent American mania for things Irish. It almost seems as though “Celtic” has come to be synonymous with “Irish.” What about the other Celts, we wondered? What about the Welsh, Bretons and Scots? Where do we get copies of “How the Welsh Saved Civilization,” or find potboilers set in Brittany? Is there a Scottish “Riverdance”? Given constraints on time (and column inches), I narrowed the fo— cus of my quest to things Scottish -— particularly books. And, yes, there are some quality reads out there for those who seek the “other” Celts. For starters, check out Foreign Parts, by Janice Galloway. Galloway is a young Scouish writer, well—known outside the United States, but as yet not a household name here, in spite of having a title selected as a New York Times Notable Book. Foreign Parts is the story of two single, middle- aged women, who have been friends for so long that they seem much like a long—married couple, able to put up with each other’s imitating quirks and still remain friends. Cassie and Rona set out on a car trip from Scotland to France (crossing by ferry, in case you were wondering). Rona is impulsive to the point of be- ing reckless; Cassie is prudent to cur- mudgeonly. Their encounters with the French in general, and French men in particular, as well with each oth— er form the body of the story, which is told in a style reminiscent of Virginia Woolf. Thoughts and conversation are fluid, and the unprepared reader may feel a bit of intellectual vertigo be- fore developing sea—legs. Galloway is also the author of The Trick is to Keep Breathing (which also garnered accolades in Europe) and a short story collection entitled Blood (out of print). SHENA MACKAY was born and raised in Scotland, but her novel The Orchard on Fire, which was short- listed for the prestigious Booker Prize (1996) is set in England. The Orchard on Fire takes place in 1953, and tells the story of a young girl’s coming of age in a poor town. Racism, child abuse and sexual abuse are all part of her experience. Mackay’s telling is understated, and for that all the more ?‘ powerful. Her obvious love and understand— ing of all her charac— ters, good and bad, makes them too com— plex for facile judg— ments, and. gives the work a depth and tex- ture that leaves palpa— ble impressions. Mackay is also the au- thor of A Bowl of Cherries and Dreams of Dead Women ’s Handbags (a collec— tion of very bizarre short stories). Drifting a bit further from Scotland, one might pick up Fall on Your Knees by Ann—Marie MacDonald. This nov- el takes place on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. For those of you who may wonder how that connects with Scotland, there are those who say Cape Breton Island is more Scottish than Scotland. Scottish Gaelic is alive and well on the island, as are music and dance forms that have since died across the Atlantic. It is a (until recently) geographi- Ann . GAPONOFF ON BOOKS als o cally isolated coal-min- ing community. MacDonald’s story takes place during the early part of this cen— tury, in the'years lead- ing up to the First World War, through the war years and beyond. Her story of three gen- erations of a family put me much in mind of Emily Bronte and Isabel Allende Bronte for the Gothic qualities of isolation, secrecy and impend- ing doom, and Allende for the melding of dream and reality. Fall 9n Your Knees is MacDonald’s first novel. She is already an acclaimed playwright (”Goodnight Desdemona, Good Morning Juliet”) and actress. DRIFTING EVEN FURTHER from Scotland, I found The Giant’s House, by Elizabeth McCracken, which takes place on Cape Cod “thir- ty-five years ago.” For those of you who may won- der how that connects ‘with Scotland, it doesn’t.
