I was never a big 1, Beatles fan. The first album that re- “ ally struck me was Stevie Wonder. We lived in a predominantly black , area of Louisville. m Aretha Franklin and Otis Redding were also a big influence for me, as was Stephen Stills (of Crosby, Stills and'Nash).” “For me it‘s changed a lot," said Tievalyan. “When I started out I was ;, listeningto Heartand Fleetwood Mac. I acid I was W by Unda Ramlt. ' but now I like Bonnie Rain, though lalso listened to her 20 years ago.“ Even the man who produced Junkyard Jane‘s first album is from Mercer Island, Philip Tsiang. “He was a friend who came out to hear the band." said Trevalyan. “He liked what we were doing, so he loaned us the money to put out the CD," That album. which debuted on July l5, is selling well locally at places like Island books. “We have songs we‘ve written separately for this. album that we then brought to the hand." notes Stoops. “But if I have an idea, I throw it out to the band and we all develop it." “i am more methodical,” said Trevalyan. “I have to sit down with a pen and paper and a rhyming die- tionary, but I hope to do more col» brimming with theband in the fumie.” The two are opposites musically, with Stoops preferring improvisation and spmtaneity while Trevalyan looks frxstmcnnu.“5hekeepsmeinlinearxi lcut her loose," laughed Stoops. Their idiosyncratic styles must be working, however, as Junkyard lane is in demand as a band. “We’re booked into gigs through the end of the year, and clubs are still calling us to play,” said Trevalyan. “This is the first time that l have actually had to take a weekend and schedule it to get out of town and relax a bit." “We have to do this now so we can work less later and make more money." said Stoops. The group has also become a popular attraction at festivals. “It speaks to the enter tainment value of the band that every- one from little kids to adults likes listening to us,” said Stoops. “What we do is fresh and original; we‘re not just another blues hand." You can catch performances of Junkyard lane on Sept. 18 and 19 at the Old Timers’ Cafe in Seattle. Call 2308656 for information. Gloss notes that although the rem‘ inisccnce neighborhood is a popular pro» gram. the majority of the residents of Sunrise are not severely disabled or ill. “The building is primarily assist— ed living, so a majority of our resi- dents arc lucid," he said. “For the most part we‘re addressing physical needs here." Gloss gives the credit for the high rating of Sunrise’s dementia care to his staff. "The most important part of the program is the caring attention our staff gives to the residents.” Doris Stevenson, a resident of the Reminiscence Neighborhood thinks it‘s a great place to live. “The girls (on staff) are good," she said. What does Doris like best about her neigh— borhood? "I like dancing: I like some- thing that keeps me going." The staff of Sunrise receives on- going specialized training in demen- tia care and work on improving cure and encouraging family involvement with residents. Each resident has a “mem— ory box" attached to the wall outside the door of their room that contains trinkets, photOs and other memoru~ those longtcrm memories. Sunrise has developed "life skill centers,” ar— eas stocked with such things as a desk with an old—fashioned manual type- writer, a coffee mug and a battered leather briefcase. to allow those who i worked in an office setting to relive memories by typing or carrying the briefcase around with them. “As we get to know residents. we gather more of their life histories and get an idea of what they like." Doanc said. “Then we can engage them in activities, like putting on the wedding gown and talk- ing about when they got married.“ Dedicated to Children's Health, Safety & Environmental wars/lass W 06““ “NM \l‘i. ‘ Chi/d ID Card: $ S Alpine Family Chiropractic ‘% Finger Printing Dental Record Evaluation: of Mercer Island Scoliosis and Spinal Evaluations PLACE: Alpine Family Chiropractic 3236 78th Ave SE, Suite 104 Mercer lsland,WA 98040 [5:9 4/ For additional information call: rm to (206) 232-4 700 ME!
