A8 Mercer lsland Reporter 0 Wednesday, September 16, 1998 SIGNS: they’re disappearing said Wensman’s volunteers stopped pulling his. “I find that difficult to be- Contlnued from page A1 I removed Ballasiotes‘ signs, Parker lieve,” Wensman said. “My crews are not delivering any of Ida’s signs. She’s done all of her own signs. I can’t imag- ine why my people would care about Del Parker’s signs — he’s not my op- ponent." Parker also suspects Democrats. “Once the liberal press goes out, there is a massive wave of sign vigilantism - usually it comes from Democrats," he said. Parker said he had 75 to 100 signs stolen from Mercer Island’s downtown business district on two consecutive nights in August. PARKER ISN’T the only one pointing fingers. “This never hap— pened in races where I‘ve had a Democratic opponent. Mr. Parker ad— mitted to my husband that he took someof my; igns down. The result has been a marked increase in the num- ber of signs placed by political cam— paigns. , , “With absentee ballots going out be- fore newspapers even make their edi- torial endorsements, it’s up to campaigns to inform people about the process. A lot of people don’t like them, but yard signs are a good way to do that,” Wensman said. Mercer Island police have already cit— ed someone for stealing signs. Officer Lowell Forsman witnessed a man re- moving campaign signs from along Island Crest Way at 9:45 pm, Sunday, Sept. 6, and placing them in his car. He was cited for stealing two signs, but police are investigating whether he is responsible for more thefts. With just two signs, the man was charged with a petty misdemeanor, and faces a maximum $500 fine or 90 days in jail. If he is found to have stolen be- tween $250 to $1,500 worth of signs, the man could be charged with a class C felony, and would face a maximum penalty of $10,000, five years in prison, or both. Wensman estimates that the aver- age sign costs $2 to $3 to make. “But it’s not the monetary part that's important. For volunteers to go out and put up all these signs, and then to see people' go out of their way to remove them, it has a tremendous impact on them,” he said. ing‘that new e1 Parker signs seem to pppyp," B iotes said. “But it could justvberpeo Ie who don’t like yard si§n5i12.7. . , ‘ ' ‘j ’55 the: allegations, fly, police agree that: rgnstealing of this magnitude is saméthing’. new for the Island. ,‘There’s always some sign disap— pearance, but there’s never been this amount of it. Either something has changed in the world or something has changed in two or three people, and I’m not sure right now which one this is," Director of Public Safety Jan ' Deveny said. ACCIDENT: Continued from page A1 to his parents Sunday after treatment for head injuries at Harborview. The third passenger, Jeremy Person, 20, of Woodinville, also suffered head injuries and was sent home Sunday. Breeding apparently grabbed the steering wheel of the vehicle from the front passenger seat seconds before it crashed over the guard rail. She was trapped upside down in the vehicle and couldn’t get free despite rescue attempts by an off-duty Edmonds police officer who jumped over the bridge to help.
