Aprayerfor our nation ur nation has been through the wringer this week, Lord. We are disturbed and unsettled by the events of the last few days. Our presi- dent’s repentance is on our minds. How can we know if his words are true and from the heart? How can we ever judge the motives of another, of presi— dent or prosecutor? But we do. In some ways, this time perhaps, we must. And yet we cannot look into another’s heart. to see there what you see. We ask, then, that whatever opportunity, intended or unintended, the president has given to your Spirit, that you would enter in to bring correction and healing and life. Give to this most public and important of men your presence, that your will, not his, might be done both for him and for the nation. Forgive us, Lord, for those times, in worship and in life, when we have spoken words of confession and re- ' morse, while our hearts were far from any intention to do the hard and often painful work of change. Take whatev— er opportunity, intended or unintend- ed, that we have given your Spirit, to enter in to us with correction and healing and life. Especially save us from the blind— n e s s o f th e Pharisees, which sees no need for re- pentance in our lives. We p r a y f o r wisdom for parents, who find them- selves in uncom~ fortable conversa tions with children too young for the public topics of these days. Put your words and your spirit in their mouths, to speak in ways and wisdom beyond their own capacity. Protect our children and our young people frbm a growing REVEREND D A L E SEWALL cynicism toward morality and ethical standards which protect the decency of society. ‘ Give wisdom in Our national process, as the future of this presidencyis deter— mined. Save the nation from all in gov- ernment and the media whose motives do not rise above the self—serving, and the ego- exercising. Save us from partisan bit- temess and revenge. Retain this presi- dent or remove him, according to your will, and not the will of any other. And give us through this crisis a new national turning of both people and lead- ers toward honesty and truthfulness; to ward decency and fairness; toward dis— agreement with respect. leadership with honor, fidelity in both personal and pub‘ lic commitment. Hear our prayers for our nation. Rev. Dale Sewall is pastor ofMertrer island Presbyterian Church and a mem- ber of the Mercer Island Clergy . Association.
