Slides Show martyrs .of Warsaw Ghetto ‘ By Linda Morgan Mercer Island Reporter “Holocaust Education Through ,Art,” a slide lecture, will be pre— sented tonight by Seattle artist Akiva Kenneth Segan at Temple .B’nai Torah on Mercer Island. The slides are from Segan’s 50 ;piece drawing and painting se- ries, “Under the Wings of God,” , which depicts martyred men, ,f women and children of the War- saw Ghetto and uprising in Po~ land, from 1940 to 1943. The slides shown are from the Holocaust paintings of the late Holocaust survivor, Israel Bern- 'baum of Queens, New York. Bern- baum was born and raised in Warsaw. His illustrated children’s book, My Brother’s Keeper, was published in the US. in 1985. The presentation will be fol- lowed by a panel discussion fo- ‘cused on Holocaust presentation through art. Panelists will include Segan and Esther Herst, the new executive director of Temple creating ‘Jewish angels’ rest on two adjoining platforms of thought, belief, tradition and his- tory,” he said. “The first is the great number of angels in the Bi— ble, and we find them from Gene— sis On. The second source is the vast quantity of Jewish folktales which have made their way into the printed book over centuries of oral telling. They are rich with angels of all sorts and are found among Jewish communities worldwide. ” A selection of Segan’s works are being shown at the Museum of History and Industry exhibit, “A Day in the Warsaw Ghetto.” The exhibit, a collection of 60 photos take by a German soldier who wandered into the Ghetto in 1941, runs through Nov. 13. Born in New York in 1950, Segan has lived in Seattle since 1980, after receiving his master of fine arts degree at the University of Missouri. he studied in Poland during the summers of 1984 and 1985.
