The City approved the Park Board's proposal to purchase a waterfront park beside the S E. 32nd street end in East Seattle The Cyclemates were reported in Michigan, and the Island responded (with $340.85) to a Reporter suggestion that "play money" be raised for a surprise "night-on-the- town" when the intrepid voyagers reached New York City. AUGUST Three brothers, Jan, Jim and Len Skoog, announced pla~s TO sail their homebuilt boat "Brinestormer" around the world Former Town Clerk Norine /V~rtin was appointed Administrative Assistant to the /V~yor of Issaquah . . SEPTEMBER A 17-year-old boy was killed in a home chemical explosion, and another teenager suffered injuries The City Road Committee was asked by the mayor to develop distrinctive road standards for Mercer Island Some proposed highway financing legislation was made public, and hit Mercer Island like a bomb. The voters turned down another school bond issue, a small one for urgent necessities Lee Olwell, former Town judge, was elected to succeed Judge Dave Harris, for 10 years Mercer Island District Court judge The 1-90 design team "scope of work" proposal was presented The Skoog brothers were reported in Ecuador . . . Bob Mess, co-founder of the Moss-Ralston proposal and prominent Island civic leader, died at the age of 4~ Voters re-elected George Clarke and Axel Julin 41st District representatives. NOV E,*~IB E R A swimming pool loomed in the Island's future, much sooner than pr,~viously expected. The School District and the C ty announced they were forming a joint co.'T,mittee to work out plans with King County Forward Thrust officials . . Some dialogue developed between north end residents and commercial interests, developing in a public meeting at which hopes for the area's future were discussed . . . The City awarded its garbage contract for the next five years to General Disposal Corp. of Seattle, on the Dasis of lowest responsible bid. Eastside Disposal, for ten years the City's garbage contractor, filed suit ,n King County Superior Court.
